Project Needlemouse – What We Know So Far

  • The only playable character in Project Needlemouse will be Sonic himself.
  • The game is said to be a throwback to the classic Genesis games of the early 1990’s.
  • It will be a 2D platformer. Some may call this 2.5D since it will most likely have a 3D feel to it. Think of it as New Super Mario Bros. meets Sonic Rush.
  • The enemies in the game will be like the badniks from the original Sonic the Hedgehog games. It is not certain if they will be called badniks or not. Here is a concept image of the first revealed enemy which looks very similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Shellcracker.

Well, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. The gameplay does look like a lot of fun, and it brings a sort of nostalgia aspect to it. On the other hand, I think it takes away from Sonic going back to 2D, especially when so much has been done to bring the blue hedgehog to 3D, and I also think it’s way too late in the game to be calling it Sonic 4. And let’s face it, if it was really a continuation of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, then where’s Tails? Hasn’t the little double tailed kitsune got a big enough fandom considering he’s been around since Sonic 2, and the fact that he’s been Sonic’s side kick ever since? He’s been in Sonic 2, 3 and SK&3 so I don’t see why he shouldn’t be in Sonic 4. (Sure he wasn’t in S&K I’m merely speaking of the combined game with the lock on feature)
I also think the fandom is a little too obsessed with Nostalgia, and I really think Sega needs to go forward, not back to improve Sonic’s track record.

I agree. It would be nice to at least have Tails & Knuckles. If Sonic 4 came out in the 90’s, I can guarantee you that they’d be in it.
